Description
This institute was started by the Government of Kerala in order to provide special training and education in paramedical courses to the students of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities. The institute was inaugurated by Sri. K. Karunakaran the former Chief Minister of Kerala on 21-01-1985. Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm), Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT), Diploma in Radiological Technology (DRT), Diploma in Dental Mechanic Course (DMC), Diploma in Ophthalmic Assistance (OA) and General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) are the various courses offered by the institute. Dr. Beena Paul. MD is current director of the institute.
About D.Pharm course
Diploma in Pharmacy or D.Pharm is a two year course with main objective is to educate and train the students for practicing pharmacy. A pass in D.Pharm course is minimum qualification to become registered pharmacist in India. Total intake for D.Pharm course in our institute is 40 and the admissions are made by Directorate of Medical Education (DME) through LBS. Minimum qualification for admission to the course is a pass in 10+2 examination (academic stream) in science (Physics, chemistry and biology/Mathematics or equivalent described in Education regulations 1991(Pharmacy act 1948) approved by Pharmacy council of India (PCI). Duration of the course shall be for two academic years (Part-I and Part-II) with each academic year spread over a period of not less than one hundred and eighty working days in addition to 500 hours practical training spread over a period of not less than 3 months. There shall be examination for Diploma in Pharmacy (Part-I) to examine students of the first year course and examination for the Diploma in Pharmacy (Part-II) to examine students of the second year course. Examination is conducted by Board of D.Pharm examinations, Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Government of Kerala. Minimum 75 % attendance in theory and practical separately is essential for appearing examinations. Failure of more than two subjects in D.Pharm part-I examinations debar him/her from promotion to the Diploma in Pharmacy part-II class. The institute is approved by Pharmacy Council of India (PCI) for conduction of D.Pharm course under sub section (1) of section 12 of the Pharmacy act, 1948.

Other activities
Students have an association and the sports and arts festivals are conducted with support of staff. Onam festival, Christmas festival, fresher’s day, college day etc. was celebrated in a befitting manner.
